MY KPW Photo Shoot - No. 5, A Morning Shoot

The girls of Studio Nouveau, Lara and Kate, are a pleasure to work with and are quite a dynamic duo! Their fun love for fashion really makes for some incredible and artistic shots and it definitely shows in their work. (And as a model who's not necessarily comfortable in front of the camera, Lara and Kate made her feel totally at ease.)

SN2

Time of Shoot: 11:00am
Bride: Liz
Hair: Hair that Moves - Lena Hartford
Makeup: Joya beauty - Joanne McDonough
Photographer: Studio Nouveau
Dress and Accessories: Occasions Bridal and Tuxedos
Flowers: Apotheca Flower Shoppe
Location: Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH

What was your inspiration behind the shoot?

Kate and I swoon over Vanity Fair and Vogue. We both have a passion for fashion and I think that comes through in our photography. We're also both uber romantics; we view weddings as fairy tales and try and create imagery that illustrates that. We both went to art school, and studied not only photography, but painting, sculpture, etc. So, I think that really helps shape the way we look through the camera. It's not just a flat plane for us - we want the photo to leap off the page at you!

Why did you choose the particular locations that were in the photos like the tree and the exterior of the house?

We love environments! From architecture to trees and shrubs, we try hard to work with what's around us rather than fight it, so we're all about things like shingles and unusual trees that create interesting shapes and angles. We find the juxtaposition of a beautiful bride against things like old graffiti walls or worn shingled siding inspiring!

What were some of your favorite photos from the shoot?

The photos of Liz in the tree are TO DIE FOR! We had the most marvelous light under the tree, and to put someone so sweet and little like Liz in this large old tree creates such a narrative. She looks like a little flower. We also love Liz agains that incredible blue stage wall with the harsh sun; she's right out of a fashion mag! So glamorous.

The Wedding Budget - Cocktail Hour Flowers

Some brides will not have any cocktail hour flowers and some brides will have more flowers here than at their ceremony. Typically your cocktail hour flower budget should be anywhere from 5%-15% of your total budget, depending on how many tables are out, how many bars you have, if there are any stationary hors d'oeuvres, and if your place card table is a part of our cocktail hour. Some venues allow brides to re-use the cocktail hour as a late night lounge for guests to get away from the music so that might affect how much attention you'd like to spend in this area.

To review once again, here's what you might expect to pay for your total flower budget based on each specified overall wedding budget:

$2,000.00-$2,500.00 8%-10% of an under 25k overall wedding budget (based on 25k)

$3,000.00-$3,750.00 8%-10% of a 25k-50k overall wedding budget (based on 37.5k)

$5,200.00-$6,500.00 8%-10% of a 50k-80k overall wedding budget (based on 65k)

$8,000.00-$10,000.00 8%-10% of an 80k and up overall wedding budget (based on 100k)

You should expect to spend about 5%-15% (7.5% for our math purposes) on your Cocktail Hour flowers. That would break down to:

$150.00-$187.50 - under 25k overall wedding budget

$225.00-$281.25 - 25k-50k overall wedding budget

$390.00-$487.50 - 50k-80k overall wedding budget

$600.00-$750.00 - 80k and up overall wedding budget

Here is a list of places you might want to include flowers in your cocktail hour:

Low-top tables for guest seating
High-top tables for guests standing and chatting, putting their drinks down, etc
Bar(s)
Stationary hors d'oeuvres table(s)
Place card table
Gift table
Guest book table
Bathrooms

You might also see lounge furniture, a special photo booth area, and many of these items might be in your reception area. This just gives you a comprehensive list of your options as every venue is different and every bride's vision is different as well.

Low-top and High-top Tables: Low-top tables are usually no larger than 48" around, seating up to 6 guests comfortably. They are more often 36" round which seat 4 guests so your arrangements for these tables can't be very elaborate and large because there's such a lack of space on the table top. These tables are almost twice as small as your reception dinner tables. High-top tables vary in width as small as 24" and as large as 36" so keep that in mind as well. They are 42" tall so you can play with the height of these flower arrangements if you wanted to and people wouldn't be bothered too much. A simple cluster of candles on each table will run you anywhere from $5.00 and adding a few loose blossoms or flower petals might make each table $15.00. A small vase arrangement- 4" wide perhaps- might run you anywhere from $20.00-$75.00 and a thin, tall and sleek arrangement for your high-top tables might run anywhere from $30.00-$125.00. Of course, you can always save money and not have any flowers here at all as your guests will not be spending that much time in your cocktail hour area. You can also re-use any ceremony aisle adornments on these tables if they're not too large.

Bar(s): The most cost effective way to decorate your bar(s) is to re-use your bridesmaids bouquets or any aisle adornments you might have from your ceremony. Putting an arrangement on one or both of the ends of a bar is a great way to keep things tied together throughout the wedding, but some bartenders need all the space they can get so make sure your florist asks if there is enough room to place something here. Adding a few candles always creates a soft and intimate glow and is a less expensive way to decorate the bar. If you wanted to create something new for the bars, a 4-6" wide vase would work well for most locations, and I would suggest staying low with the height as many of your guests will be leaning on and maybe even bumping into the bar throughout the night so low and stable centerpieces is the best way to go. I would budget anywhere from $30.00-$150.00 per bar arrangement.

Stationary Hors D'Oeuvres Table(s): Not everyone will have a stationary hors d'oeuvre table--but if you happen to, adding flowers can add just enough appeal. Typically the table is heavily displayed with scrumptious food, so either a tall arrangement or smaller vase arrangement - like a 4x4 in size - is appropriate that way food can easily be arranged. A new arrangement can be created for this table, or to save on your budget, flowers from the ceremony can be re-used (aisle dorments are great for this!). Some brides tend to have ice sculptures or stands for food to be displayed on and are sometimes a little plain. Just by adding a cluster or hedge of flowers in front of the sculpture or container will add just enough interest. Typically, the food speaks for itself, so spending much of your budget here isn't always necessary; think about $50.00 to $350.00.

Place Card Table: Venues typically use a 6' or 8' banquet table for place cards, however, we personally like using a 60" or 72' round situated near the entrance into the reception table. Rounds are nice because the arrangement can be quite substantial, and cards can easily be displayed in the round so that guests can reach with ease. The table can vary from a very simple layout of place cards accented with individual flowers or a decadent arrangement can be on display with ample candle lighting; and for many brides, the place card table is a focal point of the wedding since this is the first site into the cohesiveness of the colors and textures of the wedding. Again to be cost effective and simple, you can layout the cards and use individual flowers to adorn the rows with candles placed throughout. You can also re-use a ceremony arrangement to keep costs low. To spruce up the ceremony arrangement to give it a different feel from the ceremony, you can add additional flowers. For example, if your ceremony arrangements were all white and your reception colors are pink and green, you can add in pink and green florals to switch up the look. Also, you can simply add in curly willow branches to the arrangement to make more of a statement. If you want to make something new for your place card table, think about using a "different" container that fits in with the style of your wedding. The container can be of any shape or size; typically we like to use taller containers (around 30"), either fluted, stove-pipe or trumpet style. Flower hedges can be used to surround the base of the container or place cards can rest on top--and of course, candles are always welcomed on the table. For the table, I would budget anywhere between $50.00 to $750.00.

Guest Book and Gift Table: The guest book and gift tables typically use a banquet-style table and can be simply adorned with flowers. You can re-use bridal bouquets or aisle adornments from the ceremony and place the arrangements in the back corners of the table to allow for enough room. For the gift table, you can use a few simple flowers to place by a container - like a basket - for cards, if you are using one. For the guest book and gift table, I would budget between $25.00 and $150.00.

Bathrooms: For bathrooms, reusing bridal bouquets or ceremony flowers - like aisle dormants - are totally fine. If you have it in your budget to create new arrangements, a simple small vase arrangement works well. Remember that in most bathrooms, counter space may be slim so the arrangement does not need to be large. For a men's room, its nice to add a potted plant rather than a flower arrangement for a more masculine look and feel -- a phalaenopsis orchid is always a nice choice and can be taken home with you. I would budget between $10.00 and $50.00.

What do I like to do in my spare time? Well, I don't have much of it. But when I do have time, I love to garden, do crafts, bake and I love to be with friends and family.

What charity am I supporting and why? The American Cancer Society because I am currently a volunteer with the National Cancer Society. I help to run the "Look Good Feel Better" program at our hospital with Joanne McDonough. We are able to reach a lot of local women that are in treatment and are in need of some advice with wigs and makeup. We really enjoy working with them and showing them how to make each day a little brighter. It is very rewarding! And with like most other people, my friends and family have had to tackle cancer. My wish is to one day have the cure and in the meantime we will continue to fight!

MY KPW Photo Shoot Sneak Peek!

I am so excited about our newest series of blog posts on a recent photo shoot we held earlier this week. I wanted to find a subject that would be both insightful for brides and also inspirational for the vendors involved. When speaking with the team, we came up with the concept that a bride getting married at 11 am in a church might want to consider a certain dress style or hair and make up look that is different from a bride getting married outside at 6 pm. The same would apply to the style of photography that would be used in addition to the location selected for bridal portraits. We picked four different photographers, four different models, a fantastic hair and makeup team, an incredible florist, and four really fabulous wedding gowns and the MY KPW photo shoot was a complete success! We will be posting each photographer's experience separately, starting with a little commentary from each vendor as to why they chose the styles they created for each "ceremony" start time. We will show the before and after images of each model as well as their bridal portrait session with each photographer. This will be a very informative and fun series to keep an eye out for. Here is the run down of everyone involved and we'll show you a sneak peek photo of each of the models in their completed look as a teaser... enjoy the posts!

The Wedding Budget- Ceremony Flowers

The challenge with Ceremony flowers is that they're used for a very short amount of time in comparison to the rest of your reception flowers. Sometimes you can re-use your ceremony pieces at your reception but some churches ask that your flowers remain at the ceremony as a donation. There are quite a few options to consider when designing your ceremony flowers:

Altar Arrangements
Aisle Adornments
Aisle Runner
Entrance Arrangements
Entrance Wreaths
Chuppah
Arbor Flowers

In our previous post about flowers for your wedding, here is what you should expect to spend depending on your overall wedding budget:

$2,000.00-$2,500.00 8%-10% of an under 25k overall wedding budget (based on 25k)

$3,000.00-$3,750.00 8%-10% of a 25k-50k overall wedding budget (based on 37.5k)

$5,200.00-$6,500.00 8%-10% of a 50k-80k overall wedding budget (based on 65k)

$8,000.00-$10,000.00 8%-10% of an 80k and up overall wedding budget (based on 100k)

You should expect to spend about 10% on your Ceremony flowers. That would break down to:

$200-$250.00 - under 25k overall wedding budget

$300-$375.00 - 25k-50k overall wedding budget

$520.00-$650.00 - 50k-80k overall wedding budget

$800-$1,000.00 - 80k and up overall wedding budget

Altar Arrangements: Probably the most popular choice for ceremony flowers, altar arrangements are used to bring the focus to the bride and groom. They can be used at any location, indoors and outdoors. The containers can vary greatly- galvanized buckets, glass urns, silver compotes, stone or ceramic urns would work perfectly well for large-format arrangements. I would suggest larger scale blooms for these arrangements because they will be placed very far away from your guests. Examples of large blossoms: hydrangea, roses, spider mums, football mums, bells of Ireland, stock, dahlias. Other items that will help create a large arrangement: curly willow, bear or lily grasses, dendrobium orchids, and even some leaves- lemon, variegated pittosporum. Altar arrangements usually range in price from $75.00-$750.00 depending on the size, scale and type of flowers.

Aisle Adornments: Although these aren't necessary, aisle adornments add a lot to your ceremony decor. Some people use these adornments to delineate VIP seating, others use it for aesthetic purposes only. The simplest option here is ribbon- either in a bow form or in a simple knot with tendrils to the floor. Expect to pay around $10.00-$15.00 per ribbon. You can then "upgrade" and add fresh flowers to your ribbons. A simple option would be a single hydrangea blossom to each of your ribbons which will cost you $15-$25.00 per ribbon and hydrangea. Adding more flowers to each aisle adornment adds costs and you can also create arrangements in containers that can be tied to a chair or pew or they can be placed on the floor next to the chair or pew. Some brides want to go more ornate for their aisle adornments so you can always add more flowers to each aisle adornment. A typical range for a flower and ribbon aisle adornment can range from $15.00-$150.00 a piece. You can also add fabric and drape it from each chair for a dramatic affect. Remember, if you have aisle adornments that close off that side of your aisle for guest seating, let your ushers/groomsmen know that they have to seat your guests on the outside of each row.

Aisle Runner: If you wanted to add another element to your aisle, consider a runner. A simple white runner can be purchased from your florist or you can splurge and consider a colored or custom runner. We love working with The Original Runner Company in NYC. They create all of our custom runners for our clients. These runners can be cut to any length and can be hand painted with your monogram, wedding date, or even a quote. Pricing ranges anywhere from $75.00 for a standard runner from your florist to $150-$3500.00 for a custom runner.

Entrance Arrangements: Smaller versions of your altar arrangements, entrance arrangements can be placed on either side of the first pew or row of chairs or they can be placed in the foyer of your ceremony area. Pricing will range from $50.00-$500.00 per arrangement.

Entrance Wreaths: A classic wedding staple, a wreath of flowers on the door of your church is a simple and elegant statement for any New England bride. Wreaths can come in multiple sizes and shapes and the flowers use can vary from carnations, hydrangea, roses, orchids and the list goes on and on. Most wreaths will hang on a door using a coordinating ribbon. Make sure you ask your church or ceremony location if you're allowed to put a nail in their doors or if there is a nail already in place for you to use. Wreaths will range in price from $75.00-$300.00 a piece.

Huppah or Chuppah: A traditional Jewish wedding ceremony element, the Chuppah can be very elaborate or very simple and understated, depending on the style of your wedding. Four simple poles and a top cover is all you really need to have a chuppah but brides will add fabric, branches, garlands of flowers, and even candles to suit their taste. Prices can range from free if it's already in the family to $7,000.00 for an elaborate, fabric and flower covered chuppah.

Arbor Flowers: A simpler version of a Chuppah, an arbor doesn't have a religious connotation and can be used for any type of ceremony. Some arbors are covered in garlands of flowers, greenery, or even simply twigs. These will range in price from $75.00-$750.00 depending on how elaborate the design. Some arbors are already existing at your ceremony location and your florist will adorn it as opposed to bringing in an arbor from scratch.
